What training would you suggest for an employee who has been assigned to the Middle East on a new project?
COMMENTS FROM CLASSMATE:

I would suggest that an employee who is planning to do business within the “Arab World” to first receive training on the following, as the seem to be very important business points: Overall culture, Communication, and Legalities.
The video pointed out that although the “Arab World” finds itself very diverse, there are aspects that are central when dealing with the Arab people. One of the main cultural points that is seemingly different from that of the American culture is the importance of family. In America it is more common that business people will put the importance of their jobs ahead of family, with the idea that they are working hard for the family. The video pointed out how important the family is to the Arab culture and how it is important that the family connect should be understood. Understanding the familial connection would touch on times that business should and should not be conducted, such as certain holidays and religious observations.
Next, the business person must look at the communication aspect of business. A business person would be in the best position if they were a speaker of the language of the country in which they were attempting to do business. Having a translator may possibly work, however in my opinion, a translator is a reminder that the person is an outsider and again “does not understand”. If the business person were to learn the language, it would show that the employee is invested invested in doing business, so much so that they have committed time and money into learning the language. As we learned in previous lessons, language/ communication can create a hardship when doing international business. Sometimes colloquialisms and jargon are used that are not translated internationally, therefore a person my not understand what is being asked or the point that is being made.
Lastly, the business person/ employee should have a good understanding of the business legalities for that particular country. The video pointed out how important the legal aspect of doing business is withing Arab countries. The video also pointed out the importance of a thorough and legally correct contract. Although it is part of the Arab culture to do business verbally; they enjoy the exchange of ideas through conversation and verbal debates. Once a solid agreement is reached it is important that the information is recorded in a thorough and detailed written agreement to make the decisions final.
